After Jesus concluded His prophetic words about the Rapture and His Second Coming, He began to prepare for His final Passover, when He would be crucified. He reminded His disciples of this and was anointed by Mary in preparation for burial. After this, Judas went and betrayed Jesus to the religious leaders for thirty pieces of silver. Jesus acquired a place to celebrated the Passover and reveals that one of His disciples would betray Him.
Chapter 22 continues with the overall theme of testing. But before, this Jesus continued His parabolic teaching to the leaders indicating how that their rejection of Him will lead to the kingdom being offered to others and their destruction. After this, differing groups came to Jesus to question Him to entrap or find reasons to condemn Him.
After giving the Israelites instructions on how to observe the Passover and Unleavened Bread, Moses also commanded the nation to set apart all the firstborn of man and animals to God. This was also done to commemorate God’s great deliverance of the Jews from Egyptian slavery. And as an additional visual teaching tool to help successive generations remember this deliverance, Moses also instructed the usage of phylacteries.
