The Days of Creation 1-4 | Genesis 1:3-19

Get the notes for this study!

When we open the pages of Genesis, we aren’t just reading a history of how things began; we are witnessing a masterclass in restoration. For those who look closely at the opening chapters of the Bible, there is a profound story of a God who takes what is “formless and void” and systematically transforms it into a sanctuary for His most prized creation: mankind.

The Work of the First Four Days

The transformation from Genesis 1:3 to 1:19 reveals a God of order, precision, and immense power. This was not a random act of nature, but a deliberate Divine Reconstruction:

  • The Command of the Word: We see the Logos (Jesus Christ) in action. When God spoke, the darkness didn’t just fade; it was conquered by the Shekinah Glory—the manifest presence of God.
  • The Blueprint of Life: On the third day, God established the “Law of Kinds.” He set the biological boundaries for all life, ensuring that His creation would operate in harmony and order, according to His design rather than random chance.
  • A Universe with a Purpose: By Day Four, we see that the sun, moon, and the trillions of stars in the heavens weren’t just “there.” They were placed specifically to serve as signs, to mark seasons, and to provide light for the Earth. To God, the stars were almost a footnote—”He made the stars also”—compared to His focus on the stage He was building for us.

The Chaotic World Explained | Genesis 1:2

Get the notes for this teaching!

The opening verses of the Bible contain a profound transition that often goes unnoticed in our modern translations. While Genesis 1:1 speaks of a perfect, orderly creation, verse 2 immediately presents a world in total disarray—formless, void, and shrouded in darkness. How does a perfect Creator produce a chaotic result?

The answer lies within the original Hebrew text and a period of history often referred to as the “Gap Theory.”

The Scriptural Transition: From Order to Chaos

In the original Hebrew, the transition between verses 1 and 2 is marked by a grammatical shift known as a disjunctive waw. This signals a break in the narrative, suggesting an unknown expanse of time between the initial creation of the universe and the ruined state described in the second verse.

Furthermore, the word “was” in verse 2 is better rendered as “became.” The earth was not created in chaos; it became chaotic. This state of Tohu and Bohu (waste and emptiness) was the result of a specific event: the rebellion of Satan and the subsequent divine judgment upon his original domain.

From Judgment to Renovation

The chaos of Genesis 1:2 is not the end of the story, but the beginning of a divine restoration. We see the Holy Spirit introduced not as a judge, but as a nurturer—”hovering” over the face of the waters like a bird protecting its nest.

The subsequent six days of creation are revealed not as the initial creation of matter, but as a merciful renovation. God took a planet ruined by spiritual rebellion and prepared it for a new purpose and a new tenant: mankind.

Introduction to Genesis

Get the notes for the introduction!

The Book of Genesis is often treated as a collection of isolated Sunday School stories—Noah’s Ark, the Tower of Babel, or Joseph’s coat. However, to truly understand the Word of God, we must approach Genesis not as a series of fragments, but as a systematic foundation for the entire biblical narrative.

In this introductory teaching, we strip away the “random verse” approach and look at Genesis through a professional, scholarly lens. We explore how this book serves as God’s primary self-revelation, detailing the origin of the universe, the entry of sin into the world, and—most importantly—the beginning of a redemptive plan that culminates in Jesus Christ.

Key Insights from the Lesson

  • The Mosaic Compilation: While Moses is the traditional author, Genesis is unique in that he acted as a divine compiler. Under the superintendence of the Holy Spirit, Moses organized ancient “Toledot” (generational records) to preserve the history of the world from Year Zero.
  • The Power of Election: Why did God choose Abraham and the nation of Israel? The lesson clarifies that election was never about favoritism. Israel was chosen to be a “priestly vehicle,” preserving the knowledge of God in a fallen world so that all families of the earth could eventually be blessed.
  • A Thematic Framework: We dive into the “Patriarchal Principle”—the recurring theme of blessing and cursing. We see how God’s favor is inextricably linked to obedience, a pattern established in Eden and carried through the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
