Stop Being Arrogant! (James Chapter 4)

Get the complete notes for this teaching!

The Epistle of James is often called the “Proverbs of the New Testament” because of its direct, practical, and piercing wisdom. In our latest study on James Chapter 4, we confront the uncomfortable reality of human pride and the devastating impact it has on our relationships and our standing with God.

The Root of the Conflict

Why is there so much “fussing and fighting” within the Body of Christ? James identifies that our external quarrels are merely symptoms of an internal war. It is the lusts and pleasures within the heart—the desire to have our own way and be recognized—that disrupt congregational peace. When we seek self-gratification rather than the glory of God, even our prayers become hindered, as we ask with “wrong motives.”

The Call to Spiritual Loyalty

James does not spare the rod, calling the unfaithful “adulteresses.” This strong imagery reminds us that as believers, we are wedded to God. Adopting the values and behaviors of the world is an act of spiritual infidelity. However, God does not leave us without hope; He provides “greater grace” to those who choose the path of humility.

Submission as the Strategy for Victory

Victory over the enemy is not found in personal strength but in divine order. James provides a clear sequence: Submit to God, then Resist the Devil. When we humble ourselves, mourn over our pride, and draw near to Him, we are promised that the enemy must flee.

Shut Your Mouth! The Evidence of True Wisdom (James Chapter 3)

Get the notes to this teaching!

In James 3:1–18, the Holy Spirit confronts one of the most destructive forces in the church: the unchecked tongue. James moves from the danger of careless teaching to the spiritual power of words, and then exposes The Power of the Tongue: A Deep Dive into James Chapter 3

In the landscape of the Christian walk, few things are as revealing—or as potentially destructive—as the words we speak. In James Chapter 3, the apostle moves from the general concept of “faith and works” to the most practical application imaginable: the governance of the tongue.

James doesn’t mince words. He describes the tongue as a small member with a disproportionate amount of power, capable of steering a life like a rudder steers a ship, or destroying a reputation like a spark ignites a forest fire.

The Indicator of Maturity

The central theme of this teaching is that spiritual maturity is not measured by how much we know, but by how much we control. James argues that if a person can bridle their tongue, they are capable of governing their entire body. Conversely, a heart filled with “bitter jealousy” or “selfish ambition” will eventually betray itself through speech.

Two Kinds of Wisdom

The lesson culminates in a vital distinction between two types of wisdom:

  • Earthly Wisdom: Motivated by self-promotion, leading to disorder and “every evil practice.”
  • Heavenly Wisdom: Defined by purity, peace, and gentleness, leading to a “harvest of righteousness.”

As believers, we are called to move beyond the duplicity of “blessing God and cursing men” and instead cultivate a heart that produces the consistent, life-giving fruit of the Spirit.

Is Your Faith Real? (James 2:14-26)

Get the notes for this teaching!

It is one of the most sobering questions in the Epistle of James: “What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?”

In our latest teaching series, we dive deep into James 2:14-26 to explore the “pragmatic core” of the Christian life. This passage isn’t about earning salvation through effort; it is about the inevitable evidence that follows a genuine transformation. If the Holy Spirit has truly taken up residence in a person’s heart, it is impossible for their life to remain the same.

The Heart of the Lesson

The teaching focuses on the vital distinction between intellectual assent and saving faith. James reminds us that even demons hold correct doctrine—they believe God is one—but their belief only leads to trembling, not transformation.

Through the contrasting lives of Abraham, the father of the faithful, and Rahab, the Gentile outsider, we see a singular truth: authentic faith is always “perfected” or brought to its intended completion through obedience. Just as a body without a spirit is merely a corpse, a profession of faith without the “breath” of action is spiritually dead.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Favoritism (James 2:1-13)

Get the notes to this teaching!

The Royal Law of Love: Overcoming the Sin of Favoritism

The integrity of the local church is often measured not by its theological statements, but by its social interactions. In James 2:1–13, the Holy Scripture confronts an uncomfortable reality that has persisted since the first century: the temptation to practice partiality within the assembly of the saints.

The Theological Contradiction

The study begins with a stark command: faith in the “glorious Lord Jesus Christ” is fundamentally incompatible with personal favoritism. To hold Christ in high regard while looking down upon those whom society deems “lowly” is a direct contradiction of the Gospel. If the Lord of Glory—who left the riches of heaven for the poverty of the manger—is truly the center of our faith, then worldly status must lose its influence within the church.

The Danger of Evil Motives

James provides a vivid illustration of two visitors: a wealthy man in fine clothing and a poor man in tattered rags. By showing preferential treatment to the rich, believers do more than commit a social faux pas; they become “judges with evil motives.” The text reveals that favoritism is often rooted in a desire to align with worldly power or a fear of being associated with poverty. This study explores the “Divine Reversal,” noting that God has historically chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of His Kingdom.

The Unity of the Law

A central theme of this teaching is the “Unity of the Law.” James argues that the Law is a single, divine unit. To stumble in one point—such as partiality—is to be guilty of breaking the entire Law. The study categorizes favoritism alongside adultery and murder, reminding the believer that all horizontal relationships must be governed by the “Royal Law”: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

Are You Truly Saved or Just Deceived? (James 1:13-27)

Get the notes for this teaching!

The Christian life is often described as a journey, but it is also a battleground of the heart. In our latest teaching series on James 1:13–27, we dive deep into the mechanics of spiritual maturity, moving from the internal struggle of temptation to the external evidence of a life transformed by the Word of God.

The Lesson: A Call to Authenticity

This study tackles the difficult questions every believer faces: Where does temptation come from? Why does God allow trials? And what does “true religion” actually look like in practice?

We explore the “Anatomy of a Fall,” tracing how unchecked desires can lead to spiritual death, and contrast that with the “Implantable Word” that brings life. The passage concludes with one of the most sobering metaphors in Scripture: the mirror. We are challenged to look intently into the “perfect law of liberty” and refuse to walk away unchanged.
