Sinful Priests Who Died vs Sinless Priest Who Lives

Hebrews 7:23–28

Hebrews 7:23–28 continues the argument begun in verse 11: the Aaronic priesthood could not bring perfection. God gave that priesthood for its intended purpose, but it was never the final order. Since priesthood and covenantal law are joined, the announcement of another priest after Melchizedek showed that the former order would give way to Christ’s better priesthood.

The writer now adds another evidence of Aaronic imperfection: its priests died. Because death prevented them from continuing in office, many priests were needed. Their ministry of intercession was real, but it was temporary and repeatedly interrupted. Christ, however, remains forever and possesses an unchangeable priesthood. He always lives to intercede for those who draw near to God through Him.

Verses 26–27 then expose another limitation: Aaronic priests were sinful men. Before they could minister sacrifice for the people, they needed sacrifice for themselves. Christ is altogether different—holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. He needed no offering for Himself; He offered Himself once as the perfect sacrifice.

Verse 28 gathers the contrast into one conclusion. The law appointed weak, sinful, mortal men as priests, but God’s oath appoints the Son, perfected forever. This is a qualitative difference. Hebrews 1:3 identifies the Son as the radiance of God’s glory, the exact representation of His nature, and the one who upholds all things by His powerful word. Believers therefore have no reason to return to the Aaronic order: in Christ, they have the sinless, eternal, perfect High Priest.
