How Redemption Transforms Our Daily Relationships: Ephesians 6:1-9

When the Holy Spirit takes hold of a human heart, the transformation is never contained within a vacuum. True, biblical reformation does not merely exist inside the four walls of a church building on Sunday morning; it forces its way directly into the mundane structures of our daily lives. In Ephesians 6:1-9, the Apostle Paul completes his blueprint of the Christian household (what historians refer to as the Haustafeln). Having established how the filling of the Spirit alters a marriage covenant in chapter five, he broadens the lens to address two highly sensitive arenas of life: the parent-child relationship and the employer-employee dynamic.

In both of these spheres, the overarching theme remains uncompromised: Christocentric submission. The way a Christian child treats their parents, the way a Christian father disciplines his household, the way a Christian worker delivers a day’s labor, and the way a Christian executive manages corporate subordinates are all ultimate measures of their submission to Jesus Christ.

1. The Command to the Family: Active Obedience and Lifelong Honor

The text opens with a sharp imperative: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” The word used here for obedience is hypakouō, which literally means “to hear under.” It carries a significantly more forceful impact than hypotassō (the voluntary submission called for in marriage). For children, this is a command to immediately execute lawful parental instructions without conditioning compliance upon their own emotional preferences. It is right by natural order, and it is right by spiritual order.

Paul pairs this childhood obedience with a lifelong demand: “Honor your father and mother.” While external obedience naturally shifts as a child grows into maturity and leaves the household, the obligation to honor parents remains permanent. In Mark 7 and Matthew 15, Christ explicitly tore into the religious leaders who used tradition (such as declaring assets to be “Corban” or dedicated to God) to avoid physically and financially sustaining their elderly parents. True biblical honor demands that adult children take concrete responsibility for the protection, care, and material provision of their parents as they age. This command carries an enduring multi-generational promise: families and societies that preserve parental authority escape the self-destructive spiral of moral lawlessness.

2. The Mandate to Fathers: Leadership without Provocation

Turning to the heads of households, the Holy Spirit sets a strict boundary against patriarchal tyranny: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger.” In the first-century Roman world, the legal reality of patria potestas gave fathers absolute, unchecked ownership over their offspring, including the power of abandonment and physical exploitation. Christianity subverted this cruelty.

Provoking a child to anger occurs when discipline degenerates into unrighteous, emotionally reactive severity. When rules are volatile or erratic, the child’s internal spirit is crushed, inciting resentment and a structural rejection of authority. Fathers are called to replace emotional outbursts with steady, controlled cultivation within the “discipline and instruction of the Lord.” Paternal authority is given by God to build up, not to tear down.

3. The Sanctification of the Workforce: Eradicating Eye-Service

The Apostle next enters the socioeconomic marketplace, addressing slaves and masters—a relationship that directly translates to modern employees and employers. Workers are commanded to deliver high-quality labor with deep professional respect (“fear and trembling”) and absolute single-minded integrity (“sincerity of heart”).

The text places a severe ban on two common workplace sins: “eye-service” (ophthalmodoulia) and being “men-pleasers.” Eye-service is the highly deceptive practice of working hard exclusively when a supervisor is watching or when performance tracking is active, only to slack off the moment oversight is removed. Men-pleasers operate purely for human applause or transactional leverage.

The Gospel completely deconstructs this toxic, deceptive culture by telling the worker that their true employer is Jesus Christ. Every corporate task—whether executed on a high-powered Mac Studio or handled in routine administration—is a direct act of sacred service performed unto God. Christ is logging every unobserved moment of integrity and will deliver an eternal, uncorrupted reward at His Judgment Seat, completely independent of earthly management’s failures.

4. The Leveling of Management: No Partiality Before the Ultimate Boss

Finally, corporate managers, owners, and supervisors are handed a paradigm-shattering directive: “Masters, do the same things to them, and give up threatening.” Christian leaders are commanded to exercise the identical standard of goodwill, respect, and equity toward their workers that they expect to receive. Systemic intimidation and heavy-handed displays of raw corporate power are strictly forbidden.

The theological grounding for this command levels all human pride: both you and your employees answer to the exact same Master in heaven, with whom there is absolute partiality-free equity (no prosōpolēmpsia). Earthly rank, wealth, and authority carry zero weight in eternity. When corporate executives and day laborers stand before Christ, they stand on perfectly level ground. Let us execute our daily responsibilities with an ultimate eye toward heaven.
