Why Your Motivation for Seeking Christ Matters

In our contemporary Christian landscape, a transactional approach to God has quietly become the default setting for many churchgoers. We often observe a presentation of the gospel that focuses intensely on what Jesus can provide in the natural realm—material prosperity, financial advancement, situational comfort, and immediate physical relief. While God is entirely faithful to provide for our daily needs according to His riches in glory, a critical cross-examination of our underlying motives is urgently necessary.

In the narrative context of John 6:22–35, we encounter an identical theological crisis. Immediately following the miraculous feeding of the five thousand men (a crowd easily exceeding ten thousand when including women and children), a large multitude went to immense lengths to track Jesus across the Sea of Galilee, ultimately locating Him in Capernaum. Upon finding Him, they engaged in superficial small talk, asking, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”

Jesus did not enter into trivial dialogue. Instead, He bypassed their casual inquiries to deliver a devastating diagnostic evaluation of their hearts: “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” The crowd was pursuing the Sovereign Lord simply because their physical appetites had been temporarily satiated. They were trapped in a carnal framework, desiring an earthly political leader who would provide an endless supply of physical bread and throw off Roman oppression.

Christ immediately corrected this temporal focus with a definitive command: “Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life.” This instruction exposed the profound theological error of legalism and merit-based righteousness. Operating under a performance-driven mindset, the crowd responded by asking, “What shall we do so that we may work the works of God?” They thought in the plural—seeking a checklist of religious deeds, moral corrections, and ritualistic obligations to make themselves acceptable to God.

Dismantling this performance framework entirely, Jesus responded in the absolute singular: “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” There are not multiple self-wrought actions that can earn or contribute to your standing before a holy God. Justification is entirely non-meritorious. We are saved exclusively by grace through faith alone in the person and finished work of Jesus Christ. How we live—our refusal to lie, steal, or continue in open rebellion—is not the cause of our right standing with the Father; it is the natural evidence and loving response to a salvation that has already been securely granted.

To settle their doubts, Jesus made the monumental declaration: “I AM the Bread of Life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” Using the divine self-disclosure Ego Eimi, Jesus identified Himself directly as the self-existent God.

Furthermore, this absolute covenant promise establishes the immutable truth of positional security. When an individual places their exclusive faith in Jesus, their spiritual hunger and thirst are permanently satisfied. While personal sin can disrupt your daily fellowship (how dynamically you get along with your Heavenly Father), it can never alter your relationship (your permanent status as a born-again child of God). Once your faith is resting securely upon the True Bread from Heaven, your eternity is unbreakably safe. Step away from the exhaustion of religious performance and rest fully in the finished, sealed work of Jesus Christ.
