The landscape of eternity is often clouded by vague, poetic generalities that fail to capture the structural reality revealed in Scripture. In Revelation 21:9–27, the Apostle John is brought into a transcendent encounter where he is shown the absolute physical and structural home of the redeemed: the Holy City, New Jerusalem. To understand this passage accurately, one must execute a strict dispensational distinction between the temporal Millennial Kingdom (the Kingdom of the Messiah) and the structural reality of the Eternal State (the Kingdom of God).
While the Millennial Kingdom operates on our current earth for 1,000 years and centers upon a physical temple structure (as detailed in Ezekiel 40–48), the Eternal State introduces an absolute new creation where the old cosmos has completely passed away. The physical dirt underfoot is replaced by pure gold and crystalline gemstones. Most notably, the New Jerusalem features no physical temple. Throughout history, the temple represented a necessary boundary and mediaorial buffer between a holy God and a broken humanity. In eternity, sin is totally abolished, and our corrupted natures are completely transformed into perfect holiness, rendering mediatorial systems obsolete.
The architecture of the city itself reveals its ultimate purpose: it is measured as a perfect cube spanning 1,500 miles on each side. In biblical typology, the only other structure built as a perfect cube was the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle and Temple. The New Jerusalem is the ultimate, cosmic Holy of Holies—the unmediated, concentrated presence of the Father and the Son where the redeemed dwell in unhindered fellowship.
Furthermore, the city introduces an eternal administrative economy. While national Israel and the Church reside permanently within the cube as glorified citizens, the nations of righteous gentiles from other historical eras occupy the pristine renewed earth outside. They walk under the radiant light of the city’s Shekinah glory, and their kings continually bring their regional honor and cultural stewardship into gates that never close. It is a world of absolute security, vibrant cosmic economy, and eternal joy, anchored forever in the sovereign election of those whose names were recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life before the foundation of the world.
