The First Epistle of John stands as an occasional document, explicitly drafted to address and counter dangerous theological errors and practice patterns subverting the early church. Arrogant false teachers—characterized as proto-Gnostic and Docetic heretics—boasted of possessing an exclusive, deeper spiritual illumination and intimacy with God, while simultaneously asserting that they had achieved sinless perfectionism. Concurrently, their lifestyle was marked by a blatant disregard for Christ’s objective moral mandates and an open contempt or hatred for ordinary members of the Christian community.
This expository study evaluates the true evidence of saving faith: an active, self-sacrificing love for the brotherhood.
